The company showed a new SUV for the domestic market back in January of this year, but the world premiere of the fifth-generation Grand Cherokee took place only in the fall. Jeep positions this model as "the most technologically advanced, luxurious and off-road-ready car in the entire history of the Cherokee."
In January, a 7-seater version with the index L was shown, and now a standard modification with a five-seater interior was presented, which received slightly reduced overhangs and a slightly changed design of the rear part of the body compared to the L.
The main technical change compared to the 4th generation was the appearance of a hybrid with a gasoline-electric power plant. It consists of a two-liter turbocharged gasoline engine paired with a 45 hp starter-generator. and a 136-horsepower electric motor built into an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The combined output of the hybrid system is 381 hp. (637 Nm), while it can travel up to 40 km only on electric traction. The declared range is 708 kilometers. The driver has a choice of three modes of operation: electric, gasoline and combined. For off-roading, the car has four-wheel drive with a 2-range transmission.
Also, the Grand Cherokee has kept the classic V-shapes, namely the 3.6-liter atmospheric V6 Pentastar with 293 horsepower and 352 Nm of torque, as well as the "top" V8 with a volume of 5.7 liters, which produces 357 hp. and 529 Nm.
The base is equipped with rear-wheel drive, but there are also all-wheel drive configurations with all-wheel drive, "downshift" and electronic locking of the rear differential.
In addition, the manufacturer will also release a specially adapted version for off-road - Trailhawk, which will be equipped with a Quadra-Lift air suspension, which can increase the ground clearance to 287 millimeters, and an off-road camera designed to scan the surface in front of and under the car and adapt it. In addition, an anti-roll bar with opening is provided, which will provide better articulation of the suspension in mountainous and difficult-to-reach terrain.
The interior was also updated. Now there is a 10.3-inch digital dashboard and a 10.1-inch touch screen multimedia system. Also, available options include a display for the passenger, a wireless access point, and a McIntosh stereo system with 19 speakers, producing a total of 950 watts.
Electronic systems include adaptive cruise control, all-round and night vision cameras, blind spot monitoring, parking assistant, road sign recognition system and lane keeping function.
In the North American market, sales will start from the end of 2021, and the new Grand Cherokee will reach Europe no earlier than the second quarter of next year. The hybrid version will be available no earlier than at the beginning of 2023.
