Imagine the roar of engines, clouds of sand from under the wheels of brutal SUVs and merciless struggle on the track. And now add one detail to it: instead of exhaust gases — clean water. From October 9 to 11, 2025, an event that could change the world of off-road racing forever took place in the desert of Saudi Arabia – the debut stage of the FIA Extreme H World Cup. This is the first ever official FIA hydrogen race, and it was truly spectacular.

What is Extreme H? Off-road technologies of the future
The competition is based on an innovative SUVPioneer 25. This is not just a car, but a real engineering statement. Instead of a traditional internal combustion engine, its heart is a hydrogen fuel cell that converts hydrogen into electricity to power powerful electric motors. Result? No harmful emissions, just water and adrenaline.
At the same time, the dynamics are impressive: overclockingfrom 0 to 100 km/h takes only 4.5 seconds— and this is on loose sand! Each of the eight teams received the same car, which puts the skill of the pilots in the first place. Another unique feature is gender equality: each team's crew consists of one man and one woman, who have exactly the same responsibilities behind the wheel.

Unique format: three days of merciless battle in the desert
The organizers departed from the classic formats, stretching the competition over three days, each of which tested the pilots in a different way.
- Day 1: Qualification for time (Time Trial). Each pilot completed a high-speed lap. The task is to show maximum speed and perfectly feel the track.
- Day 2: Duels (Head-to-Head).The most dramatic stage. Pilots competed in pairs on a short, technical track. Sixteen heats for the eliminations determined the strongest who advanced to the semi-finals.
- Day 3: Mass starts and finals.Team struggle "wheel to wheel" in races of four cars. The points accumulated over three days determined the starting grid for the grand final, where the top eight crews met in one decisive battle for the cup.

Jameel Motorsport: Historic win on home soil
After three days of intense struggle among the rocks of the Tuvaik mountain massif, history was written. The winners of the first ever FIA Extreme H World Cup were the Saudi teamJameel Motorsportas part of AustraliaMolly Taylorand a SwedeKevin Hansen.
Their path to victory was exemplary. After finishing second in qualifying, the duo went on to win five duels before triumphing in the first mass heat, securing pole position for the final. In the deciding race, Kevin Hansen got off to a brilliant start and built a comfortable gap, while Molly Taylor confidently powered her way to a historic victory, seven seconds clear of her nearest pursuers.

What does this mean for the 4x4 world?
Extreme H is more than just racing. This is a testing ground for technologies that may appear in serial SUVs tomorrow. Hydrogen fuel cells, super-powerful and compact electric motors, innovative suspension systems — all this is tested in the toughest conditions.
Although the hydrogen future has yet to arrive for the mass market, the principles embodied in the Pioneer 25 are still relevant today. Efficiency, reliability and the ability to overcome extreme loads are what every SUV owner strives for.
