Over the past two decades, hybrid andelectric carsby leaps and bounds, they are gaining sales momentum and saturating the market with a variety of cars. And increasingly, you may see confusing designations such as EV, BEV, HEV, MHEV, PHEV, or FHEV. For most, the letters are a few incomprehensible symbols that are unlikely to be useful when choosing a new car.
So what is the difference between these markings?
What does EV mean?
EV is translated from English as "electric car". Usually, this abbreviation refers to electric cars that work on one or more electric motors and use electric energy as "fuel".
But, in practice, some people also include hybrids in this concept, in particular plug-in hybrids, because such cars also use electricity, even if only partially. Therefore, a separate concept - BEV - was introduced for clearer classification.
What does the name BEV stand for?

BEV is short for "Battery Electric Vehicle". Such a car runs only on electricity from its battery, without the use of gasoline, hydrogen or other energy generators.
Examples: Tesla Model X, Audi e-tron, Porsche Taycan.
What does HEV mean?

HEV is short for "Hybrid Electric Vehicle". Simply put, these are cars that work in two ways: with the help of a gasoline or diesel engine and an electric motor powered by a special battery. Such machines can have one or even several electric motors.
Classic hybrids can run both on fuel (gasoline, diesel or gas) and on electricity. It is important that the battery in such cars cannot be charged from a regular outlet. It is charged only while driving thanks to the gasoline or diesel engine.
Examples: Toyota Prius, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid
What does PHEV stand for?
PHEV - "plug-in hybrid electric vehicle". It's like a hybrid with an added plus:you can charge it with a battery from an outlet. This makes it possible to use electricity for daily trips, but not to worry about recharging on long trips thanks to the gasoline engine.Disadvantages: higher price, more weight and less luggage space.
Example:Range Rover(2018+)
What is an FHEV?
FHEV - "full hybrid vehicle". It's like a conventional hybrid (HEV) that has gasoline and electric motors. But the F is added to emphasize that this is a true hybrid with a full set of features.
Example: Ford Escape Hybrid
What is MHEV used for?

MHEV is another type of hybrid vehicle, whichcalled a "mild hybrid".
It works like this: unlike a full hybrid, this car can't run on electricity alone, but it uses smart tricks to reduce fuel consumption. It has a kind of "start-generator", which plays the role of a generator and a small electric motor at the same time. It can give additional power to the engine and help it during acceleration or overtaking.
Example: Volkswagen Golf 1.5 eTSI, Audi A7 Sportback 40 TDI MHEV
