How to Use Winches Safely: A Step-by-Step Guide from A to Z

Anyone who has ever been stuck in the middle of a forest or deep in a swamp knows the feeling: a winch is your last and most reliable chance at rescue. However, it is also a source of immense energy. A cable under several tons of tension turns into a dangerous string that, if snapped, can do more than just damage the vehicle—it can cause serious injury.

At Vnedorognik.ua, we don't just sell hardware—we want your off-roading experience to bring joy, not problems. So today, let’s put aside dry specifications and talk about how to recover your vehicle and stay safe.

Step 0: Gear — Your "Body Armor"

Before you press the button on the remote, look at your hands. If you aren't wearing heavy-duty leather gloves, do not even touch a steel cable. Burrs on the metal (known as "meat hooks") can slice through skin instantly.

Second is the winch damper. Many consider this an unnecessary detail, but an ordinary jacket or a specialized weighted strap thrown over the tensioned cable will simply "pin" it to the ground if it snaps, preventing it from flying into the windshield.

Step 1: Situational Assessment and Finding an "Anchor"

Don't rush to unspool the cable. Look at where you are stuck.

  • The Tree: This is your best friend, but it must be alive and thick. Never wrap a cable around a tree in a "choker" fashion—you will kill the tree and damage your cable. Use a tree trunk protector strap. It is wide, does not cut the bark, and preserves the life of your winch.
  • Shackles: Use only tested soft shackles or reliable steel bow shackles. Ensure the pin of a steel shackle is tightened all the way and then backed off half a turn—this prevents it from seizing under load.

Step 2: Unspooling and Connection

Switch the winch to "free-spool" mode and pull the cable out by hand.

Leave at least 5-6 wraps of cable on the drum. It is the friction that holds the cable, not the small set screw on the drum.

Attach the hook so that it is "facing" up. If the hook fails, it will fly downward into the ground rather than upward.

Step 3: The Pulling Process (Main Taboos)

Once everything is ready, start taking up the slack.

  • Safety Zone: All spectators and "helpers" must stand back at a distance greater than the length of the deployed cable.
  • Tension: Apply tension slowly. Ensure the cable is spooling onto the drum evenly.
  • Do Not Overheat: An electric winch consumes an enormous amount of current. Take breaks to let the motor cool down and allow the battery to recharge slightly.
  • Wheel Assistance: Help the vehicle with its wheels, but don't overdo it. The wheels should barely spin to assist the winch, not dig the vehicle in deeper.

Step 4: What if it "Won't Budge"?

If the winch is humming but the vehicle is stationary—stop. You are either overloading the motor, or the vehicle is snagged on a root or rock. This is where a snatch block comes in. It doubles the pulling power of the winch, significantly reducing the load on the motor. This is a "must-have" accessory for any serious expedition.

Step 5: Finishing the Job

Once you are on a solid surface, don't just throw the cable back on. It needs to be spooled back under slight tension so the wraps sit tightly against each other. If spooled loosely, the next time you use it, the outer layers will "bite" into the lower ones, potentially jamming the winch.

Why Does This Matter?

At Vnedorognik.ua, we have seen hundreds of bent bumpers and burnt-out motors simply because someone was in a rush or tried to save money on a quality strap. Safety in off-roading isn't about boring rules; it's about your peaceful journey home.

Your Pre-Trip Checklist:

  • Gloves (leather, not fabric!).
  • Shackles (preferably a spare pair).
  • Tree trunk protector strap.
  • Winch damper.
