One of the common types of tuning of an SUV is a suspension lift. An increase in clearance has a positive effect on passability, and also gives the car additional brutality. But immediately the question arises, if it is necessary to use a trailer on a lifted SUV, will it be able to cope with the task.
Types of elevator suspension
There are several types of lifted suspension. The first option is a body lift. Tuning involves raising the body above the frame. Various spacers are used for this. They are made of:
- caprolon;
- fluoroplastic;
- metal and other materials.
The height of the lift usually varies between 2-3 inches. Spacers are allowed to be used only under the condition of satisfactory strength of the body.
A body lift allows you to install larger wheels on the vehicle. It also has a positive effect on the longitudinal passability, helps to increase the angles of descent. Such tuning does not particularly affect the car's ability to tow a trailer. The transfer case, motor, other important components remain in their places in relation to the frame, as well as the center of gravity.
If the body of the SUV is load-bearing or you need to improve the suspension of the car, then in such cases only the suspension lift is available. Usually, there are already ready-made sets of reinforced suspension with a lift on sale. The essence of such tuning is the installation of reinforced springs and shock absorbers. It may also be necessary to replace standard rods, brake hoses, levers with extended ones, if the lift is greater than 50 mm (2").
On the one hand, such a lift allows you to get new driving sensations and increase the level of comfort. On the other hand, there is a shift in the center of gravity. As a result, the lifted car is no longer capable of towing a trailer of the same weight as the SUV before tuning. There is a risk that the front wheels will lose contact with the road surface. Also, towing can lead to accelerated wear of suspension components.
There is also a third method of lifting, although it is not as widespread as the already mentioned methods, given the rather high cost. The lift is carried out using a pneumatic suspension. Its key advantage is the ability to adjust the level of the elevator. In the case of cargo transportation, it is possible to align the position of the SUV in relation to the road to the stock value and avoid unpleasant consequences.
Let's sum up
Trailers can be towed by cars with a lifted suspension. But when resorting to such tuning, you need to understand that you cannot pull the same weight as in normal conditions. Special devices for lowering the towbar will help to increase the safety of transportation, thanks to which it is possible to move the center of gravity and prevent the lifting of the front wheels.
