What is a VIN number?

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)is a unique code that is assigned to each car during its production. This17-character string of letters and numbers, excluding the letters Q (q), I (i) and O (o) to avoid confusion with the numbers 0 and 1, contains specific information about the manufacturer, model, year and location of the vehicle without spaces between them. Each section of the VIN contains unique information about the vehicle.
This includesmake, model, year and serial number. This alphanumeric code is required for registration, insurance and vehicle history tracking, and is usually printed on a single line on the vehicle's body and documents. This decryption code may be needed when buying a car to find out its model year, manufacturer or equipment.
How to find a VIN number?

Finding the VIN number of your car is quite simple. Here's where you can most often find it:
Passenger cars: Check the front of the dashboard on the driver's side. Look from outside the car through the windshield. Also check the driver's side door jamb - open the door to find the VIN on the door lock. Also, the VIN code is often pressed into the underhood space. There are also cars with a more complex location, manufacturers can place the VIN code under the passenger seat or even in the luggage compartment.
* Frame SUVs have two VIN codes. One for the body and the other for the chassis (frame) of the car. Both codes are usually indicated in the documents for the car.
Motorcycles: Usually located on the steering column under the steering wheel, but can also be on the engine or on the frame near the engine.
Semi-trailers: Look at the front of the trailer on the right side.
If you cannot find the VIN on the vehicle, it can also be found on:
- Vehicle ownership documents.
- Auto civil liability insurance documents.
How to decipher the VIN number of the car?

*explanations of some symbols may differ for specific car manufacturers
- Firstthe symbol indicates in which part of the world the car was built. This is the country of origin.
- The secondthe number indicates the manufacturer.
- Thirdthe symbol indicates the type or category of the vehicle.
- From four to eightsymbols indicate the make, body type, volume and type of engine, model and series of the vehicle.
- Ninth symbolis a security code that identifies the VIN as authorized by the manufacturer.
- The tenththe number is the model year of the car.
- The elevenththe number indicates at which factory your car was assembled.
- The last six digits- this is a specific serial number of the car, which is its serial number.
Model year symbol codes
The model year character codes used in VINs are listed in the table below. These codes will help you determine the exact year of manufacture of any car. VIN codes are standardized worldwide. The model year symbol is an important part of this identification system. At different car manufacturers, the model year begins with different months, so it is indicated in the VIN number to find out exactly when the car was released and whether it refers to, for example, restyling.
Understanding these codes can help you verify the authenticity and age of a vehicle, whether it's a car, truck, motorcycle, or other motorized vehicle. Here are some examples from different manufacturers:
- Example: The Ford Mustang with VIN 1FAFP42X4WF123456 has a model year code of "W" which means it was manufactured in 1998.
- Example: Toyota Camry with VIN JTDBE32K502123456 has a model year symbol of "5" which means it was manufactured in 2005.
- Example: Honda Civic with VIN 2HGFG12688H123456 has a year symbol of "8" which means it was manufactured in 2008.

World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

The International Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) is an important component of the VIN that identifies the country where the vehicle was manufactured. This table provides a comprehensive overview of WMI codes for vehicles from around the world, helping you to trace the origin of any vehicle.
Common WMIs by region:
- 1, 4, 5 = USA
- 2 = Canada
- 3 = Mexico
- J = Japan
- KL = South Korea
- W = Germany
- VF = France
- VS = Spain
Historical context:
The automotive industry is a global industry. The main production centers are located in North America, Europe and Asia. Each region has developed unique specializations, from the precision engineering of Germany to the innovative designs of Japan and the large-scale manufacturing capabilities of the United States.
Volumes of production and distribution around the world:
The scale and variety of global automobile production can be appreciated by understanding the WMI codes. Major automotive brands have factories around the world to meet regional demand and take advantage of local expertise, ensuring a stable supply of vehicles tailored to different markets.
Nuances and interesting facts:
The first character of the VIN, representing the WMI, can indicate whether the vehicle was manufactured in North America (1, 4, 5), Europe (S-Z), or Asia (J-R).
Some high performance and luxury cars like "WOW" forAudiin Germany or "ZAM" forMaseratiin Italy, have unique WMIs due to their exclusive manufacturing processes and location.
