Tuning SUVs seems like a simple matter: buy parts, watch YouTube — and you're done. Garage romance, economy... But in reality, the preparation of an SUV requires not only enthusiasm, but also precise engineering calculation.
An error in the garage can lead to loss of controllability on the track, the "death" of nodes 1000 km away or a dangerous situation on an expedition.
This is especially relevant for owners of pickups and jeeps who plan expeditions, off-road or daily operation with a load.
Vnedorognik experts have collected 6 popular upgrades, which are better to entrust to a specialized tuning studio, so as not to turn 4×4 tuning into an expensive experiment.

1. Suspension lift (without complex calculation)
A suspension lift is the basis of any project. But often everything is limited to a simple replacement of springs or, worse, installing cheap spacers, forgetting about geometry.
What does the "garage" elevator lead to:
- Corners of cardan shafts: Cross-joints and PTOs are broken and fall apart quickly.
- Loss of controllability: Without correcting the castor (the angle of inclination of the rack), the car stops holding the road, the "shimmy" effect (steering wheel whipping) appears.
- Rigidity: The shock absorbers do not work correctly, the car starts to "goat".
To avoid these problems, it is important to choose the right ones right awaysuspension kits, which are developed by engineers for a specific car model and take into account all loads.

How we do it: Professional training at our service station for SUVs involves selecting a suspension for a specific weight (with or without a bumper), lengthening brake hoses, and mandatory adjustment on a camber-ascent stand.
2. Installation of the winch (without frame reinforcement)
Installationwinches— this is the addition of 30–50 kg to the very “nose” of the car plus colossal loads on the frame when pulling.
Typical beginner mistakes:
- Attaching the winch to the standard (weak) bumper amplifier.
- Lack of the right power platform.
- Ignoring front spring sag due to additional weight.
A winch can simply tear off a piece of the front part of the car. We use only proven platforms designed for peak loads.

3. Independent installation of the power bumper
Power bumperis not just a piece of iron for beauty. This is an element of passive safety and changes in overhang geometry.
What often goes wrong:
- Rigid mounting: If you screw the bumper to the frame tightly without dampers, the frame may crack due to vibrations.
- Conflict of electronics: Overlap of radars, parking sensors and cameras, which then cannot be calibrated at home.
An incorrectly installed bumper can not only impair safety, but also create a bunch of errors on the dashboard.
4. Body Lift without experience
It seems that raising the body above the frame (Body Lift) is easier than climbing into the suspension. But in practice, this is one of the most difficult modernizations.
Body lift pitfalls:
- Brake hoses, wiring, radiator hoses are stretched and torn.
- The steering shaft changes angle and can wedge.
- Gearbox levers "fall" into the cabin.
Without knowledge of the design nuances of a specific model, such tuning will bring more problems than clearance.
5. Installation of large wheels (without "bulgarka")
Big wheels are style. But it will not work to simply screw them on. They will rub the arches at the very first turn or on the pit.
Main problems:
- Competent arch trimming and, often, installation is requiredsnorkel(which also requires cutting the wing) to protect the engine.
- Improper wheel runout (ET) kills hub bearings in a season.
- Overloading the transmission: The car stops "going", it is necessary to replace the main pairs in the bridges, which is often forgotten.

6. Interference with electronics and security systems
A modern SUV is a computer on wheels. Stabilization systems, descent assistance, Off-Road modes — all this is tied to sensors.
Self-interference (for example, "crooked" connection of an additional light) often leads to electronic emergency modes that cannot be reset without dealer equipment. Our electricians connect additional equipment through separate protected circuits.
