What are recovery tracks and how to use them: detailed instructions

Contents

Sooner or later, every off-road enthusiast discovers a device known as a recovery track or sand track. What are recovery tracks and why are they needed? These are special pads placed under the wheels to provide traction in conditions where the vehicle is stuck. They are used on sand, mud, snowy roads, or rocky areas where a temporary “bridge” is needed to pass through. Modern models are made from durable reinforced plastic or aluminum.

Types of Recovery Tracks

  1. Metal — strong but heavy, prone to corrosion and difficult to transport. Deformation is inevitable with use. They are often made of aluminum, which is corrosion-resistant but more expensive.
  2. Plastic — the most popular due to their optimal combination of weight, strength, and convenience. Easy to clean and require minimal maintenance.

When and Where to Use

  • Sand. A classic scenario. Lowering tire pressure and correctly placing the tracks allows you to get out without towing.
  • Mud. Often requires pre-clearing or using a jack. Tracks can sink in mud, so it's important to secure them properly.
  • Snow. Works similarly to mud situations but digging is easier.
  • Rocks and deep ruts. Used to level the surface or as a bridge over obstacles.

Step-by-Step Guide for Recovery Tracks

Step 1. Safety first. Before doing anything, make sure the vehicle is in park (P mode or neutral for manual) and the handbrake is engaged. Failing to do this may damage the vehicle or cause danger to others.

Step 2. Lower tire pressure. If you're stuck in sand and haven’t lowered your tire pressure yet — now’s the time. Use a pressure gauge and reduce pressure to 15–20 PSI (around 1.0–1.4 bar). This increases tire contact area and improves grip.

Step 3. Assess the situation. Before deciding which way to exit, look around. If there are obstacles or trees ahead, it might be easier to go in reverse. Always choose the safest and least risky path.

Step 4. Prepare the tracks. First, clear the area in front of the wheels. The tracks should be placed as far under the wheels as possible so they begin working immediately. In sand, the reverse side of the tracks can be used as an improvised shovel.

Step 5. Installing the tracks. Place the tracks under the drive wheels. Position them at an angle of about 45 degrees in the direction of movement. Make sure the teeth of the tracks are facing up — they provide grip. Add some sand under the track to support it and prevent it from sinking.

Step 6. Smooth exit. When the tracks are in place and the path is clear of people and obstacles — you can drive out. Engage low range gear if available, and start moving slowly. No sudden acceleration! Steady torque and smooth movement are more important than speed. Too much throttle may cause slipping and damage the tracks or tires.

Step 7. Retrieve the tracks. Once you're on solid ground — don’t forget the tracks. They may be buried in sand, requiring some effort to remove. Wiggle them side to side — this helps extract them more easily. Then place them back in the trunk until your next adventure.

Practical Tips

  • It’s best to use four tracks — one for each axle. This provides maximum stability.
  • Attach bright straps to the tracks — this helps you avoid losing them in sand or mud.
  • In difficult situations, you can stack tracks or use branches/stones underneath.
  • Don’t accelerate — sharp gas will lead to slipping and damage the tracks.

Additional Uses for Recovery Tracks

Recovery tracks are versatile. They can serve as a base for a hi-lift jack, an improvised bridge, a jack pad, or even as a shovel in emergencies. Some models have slots for mounts and can be used as anchor plates.

Care and Storage

After use, rinse the tracks with water and check for damage. Store them in the trunk or on the roof using special mounts. Avoid storing under direct sunlight — this shortens the lifespan of plastic models.
