When we talk about preparing an SUV or pickup truck for adventures — whether in the urban jungle or on wild trails — we cannot underestimate the importance of both tires and wheels. They are not just “round things” that make the vehicle move. The size and design of the wheels directly affect handling, off-road capability, and even safety. But how do you find the perfect wheels among the many options on the market? Let's figure it out.

Factory drives: are they always the best?

Before rushing to buy new custom wheels, let’s take a closer look at the factory ones. Many vehicles come with wheels that the manufacturer has thoroughly tested to ensure quality. Factory wheels undergo strict durability and corrosion-resistance tests.

In addition, the factory wheel offset often allows the installation of larger tires without the risk of rubbing the bodywork. This is important, as the steering radius must remain as originally designed by engineers.

But sometimes replacing factory wheels makes sense. Why?

• Aesthetics. A car reflects your style. Sometimes you simply want to make it look more unique. Stylish wheels can dramatically change the vehicle’s appearance.
• Smaller diameter. Off-road enthusiasts often need tires with a taller sidewall. To fit such tires, wheels of a smaller diameter are required — for example, 17 inches instead of 18 or 20. This improves off-road performance, especially when driving with lowered tire pressure.
• Beadlocks. For extreme off-road conditions, beadlock wheels are used. They clamp the tire bead, preventing it from slipping off when driving on very low pressure. However, for everyday driving they are rarely necessary due to their complexity and weight.

Steel or aluminum: what material to choose?

The material of the wheels is another key factor.

• Steel wheels. Affordable, simple in design, and easy to repair. A great choice for those who prioritize practicality.
• Aluminum alloy wheels. Lighter, better at dissipating heat, and structurally more rigid. They can be cast or forged. Cast wheels are the most popular thanks to their price and design variety. Forged wheels offer maximum strength and minimum weight but are the most expensive option.

Of course, steel can rust — but in most cases, this affects only the appearance.

How to make the right choice?

The choice of wheels depends on how you plan to use your vehicle. Extreme off-road use requires strong wheels designed for aggressive tires — and possibly beadlocks. For regular road trips, factory wheels or similar-sized aftermarket options are usually the best choice.

Also make sure the wheels match your SUV’s bolt pattern and hub diameter. This specification, known as the “bolt pattern,” varies from one vehicle model to another.
