The history of the Hummer brand is rooting in 1979. It was then that the American army announced a tender for the creation of a tactical car that would act as an alternative to a small CJ series jeep. A year later, in July 1980, Am General began a test of its HMMWV prototype in a desert in Nevada. Having conquered for the next 10 months contracts with rivals with "General Dynamics" and "Teledyne", the prototypes of "AM General" received a voucher. In March 1983, the firm received an order for manufacturing for 55,000 copies of HMMWV from the US Army.
The increased interest of the public in Hummer led to the leadership of Am General to brilliant thought - to release a civilian version of the car. So born Hummer is one of the largest SUVs in the world.
military HMMWV from a civilian Hummer technically (if you do not take into account, of course, armor, fasteners for the installation of a machine gun, various communications, etc.), in general, was almost indistinguishable - on both SUVs installed a 6.5 -liter turboodis with a rolled motion of a 383 Standard three- and rarely four-speed gearbox. Significant differences were observed inside the salon - expensive SUVs could not be as ascetic as its military predecessor, which was created solely as a functional vehicle. That is why the designers of the GM ("Am General" ("Am General" is a part of the company since the late 1990s) have seriously reworked civilian Hummer's viscera.
