MG Motor has officially presented its first body-on-frame pickup, the MG U9, revealing full technical specifications and trim levels. The new model is a strong statement from the brand, aiming to compete with segment leaders — the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger — by combining a powerful powertrain with unique cargo bed transformation capabilities.
MG U9: innovations in body design and off-road arsenal
From the outside, the pickup looks bold and modern, but the real revolution is inside. The top version features the Smart Hatch (Mid-Gate) system — an electronically operated sliding rear wall of the cabin. The rear seats fold into a flat floor, which allows the cargo area to be increased from 1200 to 1600 liters and enables transportation of items up to 2.4 meters in length inside the cabin.
In addition to practicality, the engineers focused on comfort and off-road performance. The rear suspension is an independent multi-link design (Multi-Link), providing better handling than traditional leaf springs.
MG U9 2025 technical specifications
Under the hood is a 2.5-liter turbo-diesel engine that produces 160 kW (217 hp) and 520 Nm of torque. It is paired with a reliable 8-speed ZF automatic transmission.
The main off-road advantage of the new model is the all-wheel drive system with three locking differentials: front and rear axle differentials, as well as a center lock in the transfer case. The towing capacity is 3500 kg, which meets the gold standard of the segment.
Prices and trim levels
The pickup will be available in three trim levels: Explore, Explore X and Explore Pro. Prices on the Australian market start at $52,990. To immediately attract the off-road audience, MG offers buyers a $1,000 bonus for branded accessories, including sports bars, electric roller shutters and roof racks.
