New FJ Cruiser: Toyota is working on available SUVs

Toyota is preparing to show the world a new compact SUV that will become the successor to the iconic FJ Cruiser. According to rumors, the new vehicle will be called the Land Cruiser FJ, which is supported by Toyota’s registered trademark. The official debut of the model is expected in the fall of 2025, after which it will go on sale worldwide.

Compact size and rugged design

Toyota first hinted at the new model in 2023, when it released a teaser image. This SUV will be the smallest in the Land Cruiser lineup, smaller than the classic 70 Series, the new Prado 250, and the flagship 300.

Based on the preliminary images, the design of the new model is inspired by the 2021 Toyota Compact Cruiser EV concept. It is expected that the model will retain boxy proportions, high ground clearance, and durable off-road tires. A full-size spare wheel will be mounted on the tailgate.

In terms of dimensions, the Land Cruiser FJ will be larger than the Toyota Corolla Cross, but slightly smaller than the RAV4. Its length is expected to be about 4,500 mm, width — 1,830 mm, height — 1,850 mm, and wheelbase — 2,750 mm.

Frame instead of unibody

Most modern compact crossovers are built with unibody construction, but the Land Cruiser FJ is expected to feature a body-on-frame design. This is a rare decision for small SUVs, except for models like the Suzuki Jimny.

Instead of the expensive TNGA-F platform used in the LC 250 and 300, the new model will likely be built on the IMV 0 chassis. This is the same architecture that underpins the budget-friendly and little-known in Ukraine pickup Toyota Hilux Champ (also called Ranga in some markets). Such an approach will allow the manufacturer to preserve the off-road capabilities of the model while keeping its price affordable.

In addition, it is expected that the Land Cruiser FJ will be equipped with an all-wheel-drive system featuring a self-locking Torsen differential, which, combined with high ground clearance and capable tires, will provide excellent off-road performance.

Engines: gasoline or hybrid?

Several powertrain options are expected, although no official information is available yet. Earlier reports suggested that the model could receive gasoline, hybrid, and possibly electric versions. However, the latest data indicates that Toyota might abandon hybrid versions and focus solely on gasoline engines.

One of the most likely engines for the Land Cruiser FJ is the 2.7-liter four-cylinder 2TR-FE unit. This naturally aspirated engine is already used in the Thai version of the Hilux Champ and several other Toyota models. However, given the growing demand for hybrids in Europe and North America, Toyota may offer a hybrid version in these regions.

Thus, the new Land Cruiser FJ will be a compact yet fully-fledged body-on-frame SUV that retains the key qualities of the Land Cruiser family. The official debut of the model is scheduled for the fall of 2025.
