When we talk about preparing an SUV or pickup truck for adventure, whether it's the urban jungle or the wild trails, the role of both tires and rims cannot be underestimated. These are not just "wheels" that allow us to drive. The size and design of the wheels directly affect the handling of the car, its passability and even safety. But how to find the same, perfect wheels among the many options on the market? Let's figure it out.
Factory rims: are they always the best?
Before you run to the store for new custom wheels, let's take a look at the factory ones. Many of us drive cars where the manufacturer has already taken care of quality. And it's not just like that. Factory wheels undergo rigorous testing, including corrosion resistance tests.
In addition, the offset of the factory wheels often allows the installation of larger tires without the risk of catching the body. This is important because the turning radius must remain as the engineers intended.
But sometimes it makes sense to replace the factory wheels. Why?
- Aesthetics. A car is a reflection of your style. Sometimes you want to add a "raisin". Stylish wheels can completely change the appearance of your car.
- Smaller diameter. Tire sidewall thickness is often important for off-road enthusiasts. To install such tires, you need smaller diameter rims (for example, 17 inches instead of 18 or 20). This improves handling, especially when the tire pressure is low.
- Bedlocks For extreme conditions, where a strong reduction in pressure is required, bedlocks are used. They fix the sides of the tire, preventing them from slipping. But for ordinary trips, they do not always justify their complexity.
Steel or aluminum: which material to choose?
Another important aspect is the material of the wheels.
- Steel discs.They are cheap, easy to manufacture and easy to repair. An ideal option for those who value practicality.
- Aluminum wheels (light alloy).They are lighter, dissipate heat better and have high rigidity. Can be cast or forged. The most popular are cast aluminum wheels, they combine an affordable price with a wide selection of designs. Forged ones offer maximum strength and minimum weight, but they are the most expensive.
Of course, steel can rust. But in most cases it affects only the appearance.
How to make the right choice?
The choice of wheels depends on the purpose of using your car. Extreme off-roading requires strong rims for aggressive tires and possibly bedlocks. For ordinary trips, factory or similar-sized products are better suited.
Also, when choosing, be sure to pay attention to the fact that the selected discs match the number and diameter of the bolts to the hub of your SUV. This is the so-called "rabble". It depends on the car model.
